Winter Lights Returns to Oak Brook's Central Park. The Cocoa Cabin Calendar Is What to Plan Around.

  • October 29, 2026

Winter Lights at Central Park opens Friday, November 20, and runs every night through January 3, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. That's 45 evenings of free admission on a one-way, paved, half-mile loop at 1500 Forest Gate Road. The Cocoa Cabin at Central Park West is scheduled for only 21 of those 45 nights, and the indoor restrooms, the holiday markets and the fundraiser nights all depend on that schedule.

So you're really choosing between two versions of Winter Lights. The Oak Brook Park District has published both calendars. This post lines them up.

Forty-five nights of lights, twenty-one nights of cocoa

The Cocoa Cabin's 2026 schedule lists five dates in November and sixteen in December. Nothing is listed after December 26. Here is how that looks week by week against the full Winter Lights run.

Stretch of the season Winter Lights nights Cocoa Cabin dates
Nov. 20–22 3 Fri. Nov. 20, Sat. Nov. 21
Nov. 23–29, Thanksgiving week 7 Fri. Nov. 27, Sat. Nov. 28, Sun. Nov. 29
Nov. 30–Dec. 6 7 Thu. Dec. 3 through Sun. Dec. 6
Dec. 7–13 7 Thu. Dec. 10 through Sun. Dec. 13
Dec. 14–20 7 Thu. Dec. 17 through Sun. Dec. 20
Dec. 21–27 7 Mon. Dec. 21 through Wed. Dec. 23, Sat. Dec. 26
Dec. 28–Jan. 3 7 None listed

A few things stand out. The Cabin follows a Thursday-through-Sunday rhythm for most of December. It stays open every night from December 17 through 23, the stretch when school breaks start and holiday guests arrive. The last eight nights of Winter Lights, December 27 through January 3, have no Cabin dates at all. If your idea of the walk includes hot cocoa, plan your visit for December 26 or earlier.

What changes on a non-Cabin night

The lights, the loop and the free admission are the same every evening. The Park District describes thousands of lights along the half-mile walk, including dancing trees, rainbow arches, cascading snowflakes, twirling icicles, butterflies and musical hearts. Leashed dogs are welcome every night.

Restrooms are the practical difference. According to the Winter Lights page, indoor restrooms are open during Cocoa Cabin hours. On other nights, limited restrooms are available on the back side of the Central Park West building. If you're bringing small children or older relatives, that one line may matter more than the cocoa.

The sensory-friendly window runs every evening, Cabin night or not. From 4:00 to 4:30 p.m., before the regular hours start, blinking and moving lights stay still and the music is off. The Park District added this window last season and is keeping it for 2026–27. In late November, sunset comes before that window ends, so these thirty minutes give you an early, quieter, fully lit walk.

The path closes at 9:30 p.m. each night. It also closes in bad weather, including heavy snow, ice, rain or lightning, and the Park District posts closures on the event page. If you're planning around one specific Cabin date, check that page before you leave the house.

The four Cabin nights with something extra

Four of the 21 Cabin dates come with an added event.

  • Thursday, December 3. Chicago Street Markets Winter Market, with local community vendors offering holiday shopping.
  • Friday, December 4. Historical Society Night Fundraiser.
  • Thursday, December 17. A second Chicago Street Markets Winter Market.
  • Sunday, December 20. Brews & Views, an Oak Brook Park District Foundation fundraiser.

The two markets fall on Thursdays, three weeks and one week before Christmas Eve. Both give you a weeknight option for holiday shopping with local vendors. The fundraiser nights are a smaller way to give back. The Park District has partnered the Cocoa Cabin with the Oak Brook Historical Society before, and that partnership returns on December 4 this year.

Why the Cabin nights will be the busy ones

Last season's numbers show what a Cabin night is up against. The Park District's season recap reports that Winter Lights topped 70,500 visits from November 21, 2025, through January 4, 2026, counted by the District's AI trail counter. Spread across 45 nights, that averages out to more than 1,500 visits an evening. The recap also says many guests came back more than once.

The Cabin had a record season too. It sold 6,500 cups of hot cocoa and more than 4,400 cookies, its highest sales ever, and it did that while open only on select dates. Donations during the run passed $7,500 for People's Resource Center and the Oak Brook Park District Foundation. Admission is still free this year, and donations again benefit the same two organizations.

Put the attendance next to the calendar and the pattern is easy to predict. The nights with cocoa, indoor restrooms and markets are the ones most likely to draw crowds. If you want a quiet walk with the dog, choose an evening with no Cabin date, like a Tuesday in early December or any night after the 26th.

Before the switch flips: Graue Mill's last weeks

Five days before Winter Lights opens, the village's other seasonal attraction winds down. Graue Mill and Museum, at 3800 York Road where York meets Spring Road, is open from mid-April through mid-November, Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County lists these November programs as the mill's season ends:

  1. Spinning Bee, Sunday, Nov. 1, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  2. Graue Mill Guided Tour, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 3 to 4 p.m.
  3. Spinning for Beginners, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  4. Spinning Bee, Sunday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  5. Homeschool Historians, Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1 to 3 p.m.
  6. Brown Bag Lunch and Learn, Thursday, Nov. 19, noon to 1 p.m.

Weekend demonstrations run Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. while the mill is open for the season. If you've driven past the mill all year without going in, early November is a good time to visit. The mill opened in April 1852, and the Civilian Conservation Corps restored it in the 1930s. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. The surrounding Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve stays open daily from one hour after sunrise until one hour after sunset.

The mill comes back for one more program in December. Mistletoe and Merriment at the Mill runs Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. to noon. That Saturday is also a Cocoa Cabin date, so you can spend the morning at the mill on Salt Creek and the evening at Central Park.

The rest of the calendar at Forest Gate Road

Winter Lights is the biggest event of the season, but the Park District campus at 1450 Forest Gate Road has events before and during it. Here is the order they fall in after next Thursday.

  • Thursday, Nov. 5. Mahjong 101 at The Purple Pig, which Oakbrook Center calls its newest restaurant, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Details are on the Oakbrook Center event page.
  • Friday, Nov. 6. The Oak Brook Park District Birthday Celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a community open house, activities and a health-and-wellness fair.
  • Sunday, Nov. 8. Veterans Appreciation Luncheon, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Monday, Nov. 30. The Holiday Book Club meet-and-greet at the Cocoa Cabin, Central Park West, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A second session follows January 3 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the last night of Winter Lights.
  • Sunday, Dec. 13. Holiday Express, with Santa at Central Park West and trolley rides starting in time slots from 1:00 to 3:40 p.m. December 13 is also a Cabin date, so an afternoon with Santa can run straight into an evening on the lights loop.

Put together, December 5 and December 13 are the two fullest days of Oak Brook's season. Each has a daytime event that leads into a Cabin night, and the lights come on at 4:30.

Ginny and Paige keep this same kind of calendar for the families they work with, from knowing which Saturday the mill opens its doors to which Thursday the Winter Market sets up beside the lights. If you're thinking about a move to Oak Brook or nearby and want someone who knows the village's year in this much detail, Ginny Homes would love to hear from you.
